Cometeer

Flash-frozen specialty coffee capsules brewed at a Massachusetts factory

Cometeer was founded in 2014 by Matt Roberts, who teamed up with engineers Doug Hoon and Karl Winkler to develop a way to deliver specialty coffee frozen in aluminum capsules. Roberts had begun experimenting with flash-freezing brewed coffee in his kitchen, eventually refining the concept with input from coffee professionals. The company operates a factory in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where they brew beans sourced from small-batch roasters and freeze the coffee for long-term storage.

The process involves brewing specialty coffee at what the company considers peak freshness, then flash-freezing it into single-serve aluminum capsules. These capsules can be stored frozen for up to three years. All spent coffee grounds from the brewing operation are sent to local composting facilities—more than one million pounds in 2022 alone. The capsules themselves are made from recyclable aluminum and ship without coffee grounds inside, which allows them to be rinsed and recycled at home.
