Why it's on GiftsFeed

Four-deployment folding knife with multi-layer carbon handle and compound-ground blade

Most production folders commit to one deployment method and treat lockup as a solved problem. This design inverts that priority: it develops a new lock mechanism that opens multiple paths to blade deployment, then builds an everyday folder around it. The result is a knife you can operate four different ways depending on how you're holding it, where it is when you need it, or which motion feels most natural in the moment. That versatility matters most if you carry the same knife in different contexts—pocket, pack, or off a lanyard—and want it to feel intuitive each time you reach for it.

Good gift when

  • Knife enthusiasts who value unusual deployment mechanisms
  • Collectors looking for numbered limited editions with authentication
  • People who want a single knife that adapts to different carry positions
  • Anyone who appreciates composite handle materials with natural variation

Skip it if This is a limited numbered edition, so if you are looking for a knife you can replace identically if it is lost or damaged, consider a standard production model instead.

The maker

Vosteed developed the Vanchor Lock mechanism as a way to combine secure lockup with multiple deployment options. Rather than designing separate knives for different opening methods, they built a single lock that accommodates all of them. The system uses a button-activated release that works from any hand position, and the lock automatically engages when the blade reaches full extension.

The Shadowshroud edition was produced to mark the maker's fourth anniversary. Each knife is individually numbered on the liner and comes with a card signed by the designer. The Purple Haze FatCarbon handle material was chosen for its near-black appearance that reveals subtle color variation under changing light. The two-tone blade finish serves a functional purpose: the contrasting surfaces make it easier to read the blade geometry at a glance, which helps when you need to adjust your cutting angle.

The details

The Thunderbird V is a production folding knife built around a proprietary locking system that enables four separate deployment methods. You can open it with a front flipper, rear flipper, thumb hole, or by pressing the lock button and flicking your wrist. Each method works smoothly, and the lock provides solid engagement once the blade is open.

The 3.46-inch drop-point blade is made from M390 steel and features a compound grind. The tip section is thicker for strength during piercing tasks, while the belly section thins out for efficient slicing. A two-tone finish combines PVD coating on the flats with horizontal belt satin on the grinds, creating visual contrast that emphasizes the blade geometry.

The handle uses Purple Haze FatCarbon, a composite material made from layers of carbon fiber and resin. The pattern runs through the thickness of the material, so each handle shows unique variation in how the charcoal gray and muted violet layers appear. The overall look is nearly black until light catches the surface at certain angles.

The Vanchor Lock mechanism is engaged and disengaged with a button on the spine side of the handle. The design allows for ambidextrous use and provides positive lockup without requiring a heavy spring. A titanium backspacer extends slightly from the rear of the handle and doubles as a lanyard attachment point. The reversible titanium pocket clip supports tip-up or tip-down carry.

This Shadowshroud edition is part of a 350-piece production run celebrating the maker's fourth year. Each knife is numbered on the liner between 001 and 350, and each comes with a signed authentication card, an engraved anniversary coin, and presentation packaging.

Questions

What is a compound grind on a knife blade?
A compound grind uses different angles on different parts of the blade. On this knife, the tip section stays thicker for strength during piercing tasks, while the belly section tapers to a thinner edge for efficient slicing through softer materials. This contrasts with a single-angle grind that maintains the same geometry from tip to heel.
How does the Vanchor Lock mechanism work?
The Vanchor Lock uses a button on the spine side of the handle to engage and disengage lockup. Press the button to release the blade, and the lock automatically engages when the blade is fully open. The design allows you to open the knife using a front flipper, rear flipper, thumb hole, or by holding the button and flicking your wrist.
Will the FatCarbon handle pattern look exactly like the photos?
No. FatCarbon is a layered composite material, and the pattern runs through the thickness. Each handle will show unique variation in how the gray and violet layers appear, depending on where the material was cut. The overall color range remains consistent across the edition.
Can I carry this knife tip-down?
Yes. The titanium pocket clip is reversible and can be mounted for tip-up or tip-down carry. The clip attaches to the handle with screws, so you can reposition it without permanent modification.
Is M390 steel difficult to sharpen?
M390 holds an edge longer than most stainless steels, which means it also requires more effort to sharpen once it dulls. You will need diamond or ceramic stones rather than standard whetstones. The tradeoff is that you sharpen less often.
