Mattress Recycling Fee

This fee covers the legally required recycling charge in states that mandate responsible mattress disposal. California, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Oregon each require retailers to collect this amount at purchase to fund mattress recycling programs that keep bedding materials out of landfills.

When you add this fee during checkout, you satisfy the state requirement and enable coordination with a service partner who will collect your old mattress. You schedule the pickup date and time directly with the partner, and they handle transportation to an approved recycling facility where the mattress is disassembled and its components—foam, metal springs, fabric, and wood—are separated for reuse.

The fee applies once per mattress and is separate from delivery or assembly services. It is charged only to buyers in the four states with active mattress stewardship programs. Once paid, the fee is not refunded, even if you cancel the pickup appointment or decide to dispose of the mattress yourself.

This charge exists to fund the infrastructure that processes used mattresses at scale. Without it, most mattresses end up in municipal waste streams where they take up disproportionate landfill space and create handling challenges for waste facilities. The programs funded by this fee have diverted millions of mattresses from landfills since their introduction.
