Why it's on GiftsFeed
Leonardo Magico Fountain Pen - Arctic Blast RGT
Most fountain pens either use cartridges that run dry quickly or converter mechanisms that hold barely more. This one commits to the piston-fill approach—a built-in system that carries 1.5 milliliters and survives disassembly when the rubber seal eventually needs replacing. The inspection window means you know when refilling is actually necessary, and the proportions suit people who write for hours rather than signing checks.
If you already own bottled ink and want a pen that runs longer between fills and doesn't treat maintenance as a dealer-only affair, this setup rewards the extra commitment. The Arctic Blast finish and numbered edition matter to collectors, but the piston design matters to anyone tired of interrupting a writing session.
Good gift when
- Writers who fill from bottles and prefer higher ink capacity
- People who maintain their own pens and like serviceable designs
- Collectors tracking limited-edition resin releases
- Anyone who writes long sessions and wants comfortable dimensions
Skip it if You don't own bottled fountain pen ink and have no interest in filling mechanisms, or you prefer the simplicity of cartridges you can swap in seconds. The piston tool for disassembly is sold separately, so servicing the mechanism requires an additional purchase.

The details
This fountain pen uses an integrated piston mechanism that holds 1.5 milliliters of ink and can be disassembled for maintenance. The barrel features a transparent inspection window that lets you check ink level at a glance. The resin body is Arctic Blast, a limited run of 226 numbered pieces, with rose gold–finished metal accents.
The piston system was manufactured in-house and designed to be serviced: the rubber insert can be removed and replaced using a proprietary wrench sold separately. The metal band carries the serial number, the maker's name, and origin marking.
The steel nib is available in extra-fine, fine, medium, broad, stub 1.1, stub 1.5, and elastic extra-fine or fine grinds. Capped length is 145 millimeters; posted length is 169 millimeters. Weight without ink is 23.8 grams. The grip section measures 10.9 millimeters in diameter.
This pen is produced entirely in Italy by Leonardo Officina. The resin material comes from Jonathon Brooks.

Questions
- Can I replace the piston seal myself if it wears out?
- Yes, the rubber insert inside the piston mechanism can be removed and replaced. You need the separate piston disassembly tool, which is made from 316L steel and sold separately by Leonardo. Replacement rubber inserts are also sold separately.
- How do I check the ink level without opening the pen?
- There is a 5-millimeter transparent inspection window in the barrel that shows the ink reservoir. You can see how much ink remains without uncapping or disassembling the pen.
- Does this pen use cartridges or converters?
- Neither. It has an integrated piston-fill system built into the barrel. You fill it directly from a bottle of fountain pen ink by turning the piston knob at the end of the barrel.
- What is the difference between the stub and elastic nib options?
- Stub nibs (1.1mm and 1.5mm) have a flat tip that produces line variation based on stroke direction—thicker downstrokes and thinner cross-strokes. Elastic nibs (extra-fine and fine) have tines that flex slightly under pressure for expressive line variation, similar to vintage flex nibs but with less dramatic effect.
- Is this pen suitable for someone new to fountain pens?
- It depends. The pen itself writes smoothly and the dimensions are comfortable, but piston-fill mechanisms require you to own bottled ink and learn the filling process. If you are willing to invest in ink bottles and prefer higher capacity over the convenience of cartridges, it works well. If you want something you can start using immediately with minimal setup, a cartridge pen is simpler.
- What does the serial number engraving indicate?
- Each pen is numbered as part of a limited edition of 226 pieces in the Arctic Blast color. The metal band shows the serial number, the Leonardo brand, and the word ITALY to indicate it was made entirely in Italy.
