Darn Tough

Ric Cabot joined his father's hosiery business in Northfield, Vermont in 1989, starting on the knitting floor at minimum wage. By 2004, with manufacturing jobs vanishing offshore and the family company drowning in debt, he made a decision that looked like desperation: knit premium socks in Vermont and back every pair with an unconditional lifetime guarantee. They handed out thirty-five hundred pairs at the Vermont City Marathon that year, a gamble built on a promise to replace any sock that wore out.

The bet paid off. Twenty years later they still knit every sock themselves at mills in Northfield and Waterbury, testing prototypes in the same brutal Vermont winters their customers face. They work exclusively with merino wool certified under the Responsible Wool Standard, which tracks animal welfare and land management from farm to factory, and have shifted to recycled nylon made from industrial waste rather than petroleum. Their original hiking sock, the 1466 Micro Crew, remains the top seller in its category.
