Tim Brown, a former professional footballer from New Zealand, launched Allbirds in 2016 with renewables expert Joey Zwillinger after spending years searching for an alternative to synthetic athletic shoes. Their first release was the Wool Runner, a sneaker built around superfine merino wool that became an immediate bestseller.
The company sources materials including responsibly-raised merino wool, tree fiber, and sugarcane, and holds B Corp certification. They developed their own life cycle assessment tool to measure product carbon footprints, verified against ISO 14067 standards. One recent shoe project partnered with Lake Hawea Station in New Zealand, a regenerative wool farm that sequesters nearly double the carbon it emits through native reforestation and reduced on-farm emissions.
